Background

Supra district clinical audit is overseen by the Greater Manchester Clinical Audit Leads Group. The group consists of representatives from each of the PCTs in Greater Manchester.  The group manages a programme of supra district clinical audit (i.e. comparative audit between trusts).

Clinical audit topics are invited annually using criteria against which bids are assessed and prioritised.  The funding is used to co-ordinate the work in participating trusts.  Data collection is not funded from supra-district funds as trusts receive funding for this via their core clinical audit allocations.

Where appropriate, audits may cover the Lancashire and Mersey regions.  In these cases, the relevant region is approached for a contribution.

The aims of the group are to encourage:

• comparative audit between trusts
• collaborative work across the primary/secondary/tertiary interface
• audit which explicitly leads to changes/improvements in clinical practice measured through re-audit
• audit with explicit, measurable standards
• multidisciplinary audit with full participation from a range of professionals
• the use of more efficient patient care within existing resources
• work which will clearly assist future rational purchasing decisions
• audits integrated with routine patient management system.
