Speech and Language Therapy – Children’s Services
Speech and Language Therapists work with the key skills that make us able to communicate. Communication is vital to our social, psychological and physical wellbeing. It is a skill we use continually throughout our waking hours.
The inability to communicate fully impacts upon our access to education and engagement in everyday life. It affects not only children but also those around them, their families and carers.
A typical referral to our service will result in the child being seen at a local centre for assessment of their speech language and communication skills. This may include assessment of their understanding of language; their ability to express themselves in spoken language; their sound system development and their social communication and interaction. Following this the child may be referred onto a specialist speech and language therapist or remain in the local centre for a programme of therapy, advice and support for the child and their family/carers. The speech and language therapist will then liaise with other health and education professionals as required.
We offer a service to the following groups:
- Developmental speech and language disorders (includes language delay, language disorder, sound system delay and sound system disorders)
- Learning disabilities
- Autism
- Fluency disorders
- Feeding and swallowing disorders
- Speech dyspraxia (motor organizational disorder resulting in impaired intelligibility)
- Hearing impairment
- Voice disorders
- Cleft lip/palate and velopharyngeal anomalies
- Alternative and augmentative communication
