Bealey Community Hospital
Bealey Community Hospital is a 19 bedded, inpatient unit, which was built in 1903 by the Bealey family. The hospital was originally a convalescent home and later became a maternity hospital. Today it serves the local population as a Community Hospital.
The 19 beds are situated in 6 separate wards or single rooms throughout the hospital. There is a conservatory which is used as a lounge, a large dining room where patients eat their meals and a quiet room. Other facilities include a Therapy room used by the Physiotherapist to assist in improving mobility and an Assessment Kitchen, used by the Occupational Therapist to aid rehabilitation.
The hospital caters for adults over the age of 18 who require rehabilitation or Intermediate Managed Care (IMC); management of their symptoms; treatment of leg ulcers or other wounds; palliative or end of life care. The hospital does not provide long-term or respite care. Patients usually stay with us for 2 – 4 weeks, or if on the IMC scheme up to 6 weeks.
The hospital has a team of nursing staff on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This team comprises of qualified and unqualified nurses. All patients are allocated a team of ‘Named Nurses’ who will assist in the planning and co-ordination of care in conjunction with the patient, their carers and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Patient care is nurse led with the input of the patients’ own General Practitioner (GP). The GP or one from the same practice will visit when needed; this will not necessarily be every day.
Any patient admitted under IMC will also be seen by Dr Sethi, consultant physician, every Tuesday.
Visiting times are:
- 09:30 to 11:45
- 14:00 to 16:45
- 18:00 to 20:00
All patients are offered a choice of meals from the menu cards provided. Staff will assist in completing these menus. The choice offered caters for most dietary need, but if any problems arise, staff are happy to liaise with the catering department to arrange an alternative.
Community Services Bury has a no smoking policy. This means that no smoking is permitted within the hospital or the grounds. We appreciate this may cause some difficulties for patients who are smokers; therefore some staff have been trained to assess and implement nicotine replacement therapy in conjunction with the GP.
Who is eligible to access our service?
Adults aged 18 or over with a GP who has signed an agreement to use Bealey Community Hospital. Patients must have a medical need to be admitted as the unit does not accept social respite care.
How to access our service
The Hospital may be accessed by patients being admitted from their home or from secondary care. All patients must have a GP who is in agreement to manage their care whilst in the hospital. The GP must contact the hospital in order to co-ordinate an admission date. Sometimes a bed is not always immediately available and therefore the patient will be put on a waiting list for the next available vacancy.
