Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
What is COPD?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an ‘umbrella’ term for people with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. With COPD the airflow to the lungs is restricted (obstructed). COPD is usually caused by smoking. Symptoms include cough and breathlessness.
The COPD Service provides proactive, planned COPD management and care in a community setting using a multi disciplinary team approach.
The COPD service is delivered using a multi disciplinary team approach.
The multidisciplinary approach includes:
- Establishing/confirming diagnosis of COPD.
- Review of pharmacological therapy including optimisation of inhaler technique and action planning for prevention and prompt treatment of exacerbations of COPD.
- Assessment of hyperventilation syndrome with breathing control and relaxation exercises.
- Dietary advice and recommendations regarding metabolic aspects of COPD especially for patients with a low BMI.
- Support and education for patients and their relatives.
The COPD service provides clinical assessment and provision of a comprehensive management plan with onward referral to services not within the scope of the COPD clinic but available within Community Services Bury, for example, the stop smoking service, pulmonary rehabilitation programme and comprehensive oxygen assessment. The assessment will provide a confident, accurate clinical diagnosis of COPD to inform chronic disease registers.
