Health Trainers
What is a health trainer?

Health trainers are a new NHS workforce who have been recruited as part of a government initiative to reduce health inequalities.

Why would I need a health trainer?

We all have issues in our lives that may affect our health in some way, for example, you may want to lose some weight, enjoy a healthier diet or just feel better about yourself. Implementing this healthy behaviour isn’t always as easy as it first seems. Health trainers are trained to help you to tackle your particular health issue in an understanding and supportive way.

How will my health trainer help me?

Health trainers can help you with many issues that can affect your health and wellbeing, such as:

  • Eating healthily.
  • Increasing your physical activity.
  • Weight management.
  • Improving your sleep.
  • Self-managing your long-term condition.
  • Reducing your alcohol consumption.
  • Breastfeeding.
  • Stopping smoking.
What will my health trainer do?

Your health trainer will offer you free and confidential support that will help you to make healthy lifestyle choices. They will:

  • Listen to you
(sessions last up to 1 hour).
  • Support you to change your lifestyle.
  • Encourage and motivate you to make healthy changes.
  • Help you set goals and make plans.
  • Suggest ways of overcoming obstacles.
  • Accompany you on your journey to better health.
Where will I meet my health trainer?

Your health trainer can meet you in a variety of venues within the borough of Bury, at a location convenient for you. These venues include Community Centres, Children’s Centres, GP Surgeries, NHS Buildings among others.

When do health trainers work?

Health trainers normally work Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm. However, they may be able to accommodate some evening and weekend appointments. Please ask for availability.

Who is eligable to access the service?

For the cost of a local phone call, anybody over the age of 18 years (16+ for Stop Smoking and Breastfeeding support) who is registered with a Bury GP Practice and/or is a resident within the borough of Bury can access Bury’s Health Trainer Service.
