Occupational Therapy Service

Occupational Therapy provides a range of specialist assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services for the population of Bury. This encompasses a varied range of services to treat individuals with disabilities within a range of age groups from children to older people. Occupational Therapy therefore provides access to services for the whole population of Bury who have a physical disability.
The aim of the Occupational Therapy Service is to provide physical assessment treatment and rehabilitation to provide functional independence in activities of daily living to the population of Bury. This will ensure continued independence at home and in the community. The service will develop to meet the changing needs and demands of individuals of all ages, as timely and effectively as possible to prevent unnecessary hospital admission.

“Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activity with individuals who are limited by physical injury or illness, psychosocial dysfunction, developmental or learning disabilities, poverty and cultural differences or the ageing process in order to maximise independence, prevent disability and maintain health”

Who is eligible to access our service?
Physical disability can be the result from a variety of illnesses or conditions, and may vary in severity and prognosis. Clients that are referred to Occupational Therapy have complex needs and may present with one or more of the following conditions:
- Orthopaedic conditions – Fractures of upper and lower limb extremities, spinal injuries, joint replacement and hand surgery, Peripheral nerve injuries.
- Rheumatology – Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, lupus, repetitive strain injury, tennis elbow, raynauds disease.
- Neurological conditions – Stroke / CVA, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s, Multiple sclerosis, acquired brain injury, spinal cord lesions, cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s.
- Palliative care – All cancers / terminally ill.
- General Medical– Amputees, general surgery, chest infections, falls, infections, Myocardial infarction, organ failure, renal failure, cancer, urinary infections, respiratory, acute cardiovascular disorder, hearing impairment / sight impairment.
- Long term conditions – Cardiovascular disorder, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, COPD, asthma, epilepsy.
The Paediatric OT Service provides assessment and treatment of children aged 0-21 with physical disabilities living within Bury. Conditions treated include Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Downs Syndrome, Specific Learning Disabilities and Developmental Co-ordination Disorder.
