School Health Teams
Philosophy of care - the School Health Service

The School Health Service is made up of several levels of expertise to ensure full coverage and support to all children, young people and their families/guardians.

The health and well-being of each individual is at the forefront of any intervention that occurs by the team emphasising the individual’s voice to be heard.

The team’s ultimate goal is to encourage a healthy mind and body for every individual to promote individual aspirations.

Provisions of an evidence based service ensure these goals are met.
The team’s liaison with other services is fundamental towards the identification and prevention of individuals, families and groups who are at risk and in need of further support.

Continuous reflection and evaluation allows individual development in line with local and national policy.

School health teams consist of school nurses, support workers and community medical officers. They provide a service which includes:

  • Personal, Social and Health Education programmes (PSHE).
  • Identification of social care needs including the need for safeguarding.
  • Providing advice on relationships and sexual health.
  • Immunisation and vaccination programmes.
  • Liaison and referrals with other agencies.
  • Working with parents/guardians to promote positive parenting.
  • Offer support and counselling, to promote positive  health and well-being in children, young people and their families.
  • General Health advice, health assessments and support with existing medical conditions.
