NHS Bury is looking at pharmaceutical services through the development of a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment.

In order to provide a good service, NHS Bury needs to review regularly what services we have, what local people need and how things might change in the future. With this in mind, the government has asked all Primary Care Trusts to publish a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment by February 2011. Through the development of a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment, NHS Bury will be able to look at how best to buy the services the public in Bury want from their pharmacies. It will help us to establish if there are any gaps in services, to explore future provision and potential new services. It will ultimately become the basis of decision making when applications are received for new pharmacies.

During July and August 2010, NHS Bury embarked upon an extensive engagement plan, aimed at finding out people’s views on existing pharmacy services, whether current provision meets local needs and how services could be improved in the future.  The results of this engagement activity were then fed in to the production of the draft Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment document.
