Moorgate Primary Care Centre gets Ministerial opening
Health Secretary Alan Johnson officially opened a new £10 million primary care centre in Bury today marking the transformation of health services in the town.
The Moorgate Primary Care Centre is located in the centre of the town and brings together much needed health and wellbeing services under one roof, improving access and making services more convenient for local people.
During a tour of the new facilities at the Derby Way site, Mr Johnson met staff and patients and heard about the range of NHS services that will be available including dentistry, minor surgery, community midwives and a nurse led walk-in centre.
Mr Johnson said: “It is vital that primary care services meet the needs of local people in terms of location, accessibility, and range and quality of services provided. The Moorgate Primary Care Centre does all this and more, and I am delighted to have had the opportunity to officially open this facility and meet some of the staff and patients.”
Mr Stephen Mills, Chief Executive for NHS Bury said: “We are delighted that Mr. Johnson could officially open the first of our new primary care centres that are set to transform community based services in Bury. Years of planning and ambition have gone into bringing this project to fruition, and having Mr. Johnson come to open it is a real honour.”
The first of many services are already operating from the centre, with more to move in during early 2009. This includes a nurse led Walk-in Centre which will relocate from Parsons Lane, community midwives, dentistry, minor surgery, and diagnostics. From the Spring 2009 the centre will also boast a new additional GP service, offering a walk in facility for registered and non registered patients, seven days a week, from early in the morning until late in the evening.

Moorgate Primary Care Centre has been created through a partnership between NHS Bury, Bury Council and Thornfield Properties PLC.
The impressive build which spans over four floors and extends to around 4,000 square metres of clinical space, boasts 40 consulting and examination rooms, 21 treatment and diagnostic rooms and two minor surgery rooms.
