HPV campaign hits Bury

A campaign which aims to encourage eligible girls and young women to have a life saving jab is underway in Bury.

The HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination protects against the two strains of HPV that can cause cervical cancer.

The campaign is targeted at those girls and young women eligible for the vaccine. It is also targeted at their families with a view to raising awareness within the wider community about the benefits of having the jab, and the importance of having the full dose to get best protection.

The campaign which hinges on the message ‘It only takes 60 seconds to arm yourself against cervical cancer’ involves promotion via Bluetooth technology, an interactive website and ‘blog’ facility and incentives to encourage uptake, with a view to reaching out directly to the target audience.

The HPV vaccination is available to year 8 and year 10 girls at school. Young women aged 15 to 18 can get the vaccination from their doctor’s surgery by making an appointment Natalie Moran, Assistant Director of Public Health for NHS Bury said; “The HPV vaccine will save lives and our campaign aims to sell the benefits of having the vaccine to eligible girls and young women. As part of the campaign we have set up a targetted interactive website, that lets people know more about the vaccine, including who is eligible and where they can get protected. It also emphasises the importance of having the full three doses in order to get best protection.”
