Long service and innovation celebrated at public event

NHS Bury thanked staff for their unswerving service to the NHS at a special public event last week.

The awards were presented at NHS Bury’s Annual General Meeting on 20 September. 61 members of staff received awards this year, between them they had notched up 1,760 years service to the NHS. The awards were for staff that have achieved between 20 and 40 years NHS service (in five year milestones).

Paul Horrocks, Chair of NHS Bury said: “Our staff are our greatest asset, I am proud to be part of an organisation were staff feel proud to work here and offer their loyalty in this way. Through their commitment they show a passion for their work, when it comes to providing quality health care to local people.”

“We have been through some challenging times this year but our staff continue to give 100%. The awards aren’t just for front line staff, but also those who work ‘behind the scenes’ who support the delivery of healthcare in non clinical roles.”

NHS Bury’s Team Innovation Awards were also presented at the event. Teams within the organisation and those involved in joint working arrangements with partner organisations, submitted applications for the four award categories, these were for teams that have benefited:

  • Children and young people
  • Adults
  • Older people
  • There is also an award for the support team that has enabled the improvement of patient care

This year 20 teams, who are all passionate about their work in the pursuit of innovation and quality in health, applied for the awards.

John Boyington CBE, Chief Executive for NHS Bury said: “Teams entering this year’s awards were asked to demonstrate how their work embraces the pledges made in the NHS Constitution. The calibre of applications was as always, very high this year, and I’m pleased I did not have the difficult job of judging the applications!”

The winners of the awards were chosen by a panel of Non Executive Directors of NHS Bury chaired by Cllr. John Byrne, Non Executive Director and Mayor of Bury.

After much deliberation, four clear winners emerged, and each were awarded a framed certificate.

The winners were:

For the children and young people service award known as the Dr. Narinder Prabhakar Award, the winner was the Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Team - Learning Disabilities, regarding the use of new technology to support service users.

For the adult service award, known as the Colin Caffrey Award, the winner was Bury Dental Access Centre regarding the Minor Oral Surgery Service that provides easy, fast and convenient access to treatment in modern surroundings.

For the older people service award, known as the Ainslie Dures Award, the winning team was the ‘It’s Your Choice’ project, a clinically-led referral management and choice centre, where the team helps patients who require care outside of their GP surgery to choose the best service for them.

And, for the support service award, known as the David Myers Award, the winner was the Health Improvement Team for the Self Care for You course which aims to motivate and empower individuals to adopt self care approaches that will help them improve their lifestyles, lead to positive health behaviours and health improvement.
