Emergency planning
NHS Bury is responsible for developing and maintaining emergency and business continuity plans, procedures and equipment (in line with the Civil Contingencies Act (2004).
We work closely with our partners, for example Bury Council, and other stakeholders to plan in the event of a major incident. We also ensure that key staff are trained to deal with a major incident, and carry out exercises to thoroughly test out our plans. The Director of Public Health is the Emergency Planning Lead for NHS Bury. NHS also employs an Emergency Planning Officer.
NHS Bury has three key areas of responsibility during a major incident:
- The provision of primary care services including psychological support (in conjunction with our partners).
- The provision of prescription medicines to reception centres (a reception centre is a facility where people evacuated from an area affected by an incident can receive essential welfare services, basic refreshments and shelter for short periods).
- Assisting NHS Hospital Trusts in the discharge of patients.
