Equality Impact Assessments

Impact assessments are a fundamental enabler for NHS Bury meeting the diverse needs of people across Bury. The impact assessment tool has been designed to enable the organisation to be transparent in how it makes decisions in line with the Equality Act 2010 and Duty.

Equality Duty

Aim1:  Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010.

Aim 2: Advance equality of opportunity between people who shared a protected characteristic and those who do not.

Aim 3: Foster good relations between people who shared protected characteristics and those who do not.

An Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) is the process we use to check that our policies and decisions are fair for all groups. The process includes:

  • An initial screening to identify which proposed activities and policies may affect groups differently.
  • An initial assessment for policies which may have an impact on some groups.
  • A full assessment, involving and consulting local people, to identify actions to reduce the negative effects and promote fair services.
  • Publishing findings.

All EIAs must be approved by the Equality and Diversity Lead before they are acted upon and no policy can be approved without an EIA.

We undertake these assessments to ensure that we provide a fair and equal service, to all staff through the policies and procedures that we have in place and also through the services that we provide to the residents and users of local services.

By assessing the potential effects of a policy on particular populations, we can increase the probability that a policy will promote equality of access and equity of outcomes

Equality impact assessments are systematic ways of determining whether a policy or approach that an organisation is introducing affects all groups equally or whether it potentially may have a differential impact on one or more particular groups.

Over time, we will upload examples of NHS Bury EIAs on this website, in the meantime, anyone who would like to access a specific Assessment can request this via NHS Bury's Equality and Diversity Lead.
